Miracle in the Andes

In 1972,an Uruguayan plane carrying 45 passengers crashed somewhere in the icy mountains of the Andes.Of the 45 passengers, most of them were members of the then Uruguayan rugby team which was on its way to play a match at Chile .And only 16 survived to tell their tale.

The 72- day ordeal that the 16 survivors went through in those icy mountains may read to some as horrifying and revolting. But Nando Parrado ,in his book "Miracle in the Andes",truly makes the tale one of the most inspiring ones I've read of late.

The author, who also turned out to be the leader of the pack ,later, describes, how they survived in sub zero conditions with barely any water or food. And,finally, when they ran out of the meager stock of food that they had, they had to resort to eating the flesh of their dead friends.
I don’t know if I would have had it in me to do that even if I were at the brink of death. After trying unsuccessfully to cross the Andes manytimes to find some help, finally ,the author and another member,Roberto decide to
cross the Andes. They trek the dangerous mountains for 10 days ,with barely any mountain gear ,food or water, to reach the nearest village and are finally rescued.

The book is an awe inspiring tale of the human will to survive against all odds. I realized,as I read the book ,that,Sometimes in life, you 've to lose what you have to appreciate what you really had.A must read,in my opinion.

Now picture this

Ilamaaran is on his way to office,in the suburban Chennai train.Crowded as hell,he gets only standing space. To beat those Monday blues,he surfs through the faces of his co-passengers .'Tis a monotonous crowd, this one.And just as he is about to look out the window (to see better sights ,like children defecating near the railway lines, probably),suddenly, a face catches his eye.A pretty woman, with, large expressive eyes loaded with kaajal to make the beautiful even more beautiful ,is standing a few feet away from him.He continues to stare at the angel ,he is unable to take his eyes off her.Suddenly, she looks in his direction.Embarassed to be caught sight-adichufying,he averts his eyes immediately ,hoping that she didn’t catch him staring at her. After a few minutes, wanting to catch another glimpse ,he looks at her yet again..
He looks..she looks..he turns away..then she turns away..again he looks..
And so it goes, till finally she reaches her station and gets off the train.

The next day,Ila boards the same train. He does, what every other man would do.His eyes rove the compartment, searching for the fairy angel he had spotted yesterday. And ,yes there she is ! this time she is staring at him, with the same knowing smile on her face.Embarassed,Ila turns away. For the rest of the journey ,he doesn’t so much as look in her direction.

That night,Ila tosses and turns in bed.Everytime he closes his eyes, his fairy angel(lets call her Maya) teases him in his thoughts. He tries hard to get her out of his mind, but barely succeeds.

He knows this isn’t right..
'Cos he is a married man....Yet,he stays awake, waiting for dawnbreak, waiting for yet another day, when he could just see Maya again...

These are the lyrics of a song "Karu Karu" from Pachaikili Muthucharam directed by Gautham. The newspapers claim that Gautham has revealed that this movie is loosely based on the book "Derailed" by James Siegel. If so,then I think this song portrays the situation given above. The sensuous, dangerous feel of the song aptly captures the feelings of a married man ,who is unable to stop himself from falling for another woman. The song does strongly reek of typical Harris Jeyaraj music, but then ,which music director doesn’t ?

Now picture this, and listen to the number
